Indicating he has heard of his plans to remain in Colorado and expressing his desire that he return to Austin; recounting the "frequent raids of the Servant Girl annihilators" that enliven the dull town, including an account of one particularly eventful night he describes as "one of the most recherche and per diem affairs ever known in the city"; providing an update about the store, where he indicates Dave is badly needed; sharing a lengthy parable that he asks for his help to complete.

O. Henry was born as William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro and moved to Texas for his health in 1882 where he became a ranch hand. Porter relocated to Austin, TX and worked as a pharmacists, served as draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a teller at First National Bank of Austin, and started a humorous weekly magazine, The Rolling Stone.
